Meet Rolo - Our Scout Of The Month

We first met Rolo and his human on Instagram, after word of mouth led them to Scout’s Honour as a neat way to mend Rolo’s torn sweater.
We especially love seeing our badges used for mending - it gives them even more purpose and keeps those well loved adventure essentials going strong.

We chatted with Megan, Rolo’s human to learn more about his adventures, quirks, and favourite Scout’s Honour badges.

Tell us about your dog! What’s their name, breed, age, and one fun fact about them?

Rolo is an adventure-loving 3 year old working (unemployed) cocker spaniel. Rolo is completely blanket and sausage obsessed, where there’s a blanket to be suckled, you’ll probably find a little spaniel called Rolo!

What’s their personality like? Are they playful, mischievous, adventurous, or a total cuddle bug?

Rolo is a little dog with some big feelings and personality. At home? Total cuddle bug who loves nothing more than a cwtch (Welsh word for cuddle) on the sofa. But he likes to keep me on my toes! No sock is safe with him around.

When we’re out exploring he can become a little anxious, especially in built up areas. It’s something we’re continuing to work on but he’s doing a lot better. Although you’d never believe he was an anxious dog when you first meet him!

Rolo’s love for adventure and blankets actually led me to create his memory blanket!
An on-going project which see’s us collect merit badges from all our escapades. It’s lovely sitting back, looking at the blanket and remembering all the adventures we’ve had together and, then looking at the spaces we have left to fill.
Although this one stays firmly out of Rolo’s reach!

Which are your dog’s top three badges from Scout’s Honour, and why do you love them?

We love all our Scout’s Honour badges, and have so many more to collect! But Rolo’s top 3 are:

  • Summit Seeker: on weekends you can normally find us out in the mountains. We’re local to Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) and are currently ticking off all the Nuttalls in this region before my 30th birthday in May 2026! There’s no summit Rolo won’t sniff out.

  • Doggy Paddle Pro: Rolo is a huge water lover. When we do a less strenuous stroll it tends to be the Brecon and Monmouth canal where Rolo loves to doggy dive into the water.

  • Camp Canine: We’ve been lucky to do a few camping trips with Rolo now! He first earnt this badge on his 2nd birthday when we went camping in Scotland. Que 1 flooded tent, 7 days of non-stop rain and 1 merit badge officially earnt.

Is there a specific moment or story where your dog really earned one of their badges?

Once Rolo stole socks and a pair of pants off the washing line, buried them in the garden and it wasn’t realised until we came to re-plant our flower bed! We were rather confused, and amused, and Rolo sat there with an excited waggy tail thinking we’d just uncovered his buried treasure.

Around the same time, Rolo tore a hole in his Equafleece whilst out adventuring. On a group beach trip I mentioned to one of Rolo’s besties, Zelda and her human Robyn, that I needed to repair it and was going to get an iron-on patch. Robyn mentioned Scout’s Honour, the iron-on badges and showed us ‘Wiggle Butt’ that she had on her backpack. I was intrigued and when I saw the ‘Sock Thief’ badge on the website, I was officially sold. Rolo’s first badge had officially been earnt and continues to live proudly on his Equafleece.

What does a typical day look like for your dog?

Rolo will get up at 8:30am, sharp. He’ll spend the next 30 minutes strutting his stuff around his kingdom (the garden) before enjoying a leisurely breakfast. As I work from home he then spends the rest of the day snoozing by my side, occasionally stealing something he shouldn’t. In the evening we’ll go for a sniffy local walk or stroll around our local wood, his favourite place. Rolo then returns to his throne (the sofa) and completes his shift as the Neighbourhood Watch. We always joke he should’ve been called Parker, short for Nosey Parker.

If your dog could plan the perfect day, what would it include?

Rolo’s perfect day would have to be about 3 days long because he’d want to cram so much in, he’s not one for napping or taking things slowly. It would involve getting up early to head into the mountains, bagging himself several summits before consuming his summit snacks (sausages on tap). He’d then want to spend the afternoon strolling through a local village where he can hopefully spend his pocket money on natural treats and collecting badges. Finally, he’d want to spend his evening walking through woodland alongside a stream, river, lake, anything he can swim in, before watching a sunset chewing his new treats.

Do they have any funny routines, habits, or “must-haves” throughout the day?

Rolo is a proper little character. He HAS to follow you to the shower and will have a toddler tantrum if you try shut him out. When we’re out locally he will also refuse to walk any further until he’s had his sausage treat fix.

If you could create a custom badge just for your dog, what would it say?

It would have to be along the lines of sniffing, perhaps Sergeant Sniffer. He’s forever using his nose whether that’s on the ground or sniffing the air. I’d love to know what he’s thinking whilst sniffing but it’s more than likely ‘where is my next sausage?’
